This town might be small but it’s packed with charm and character and plenty of things to do around Coolamon, NSW. With a population of around 4,350, this little gem in the Riverina has a close friendly community and an easy-going atmosphere, that makes you want to take your time. Wander down Cowabbie Street, and see lovely old-school architecture of Victorian buildings. It’s like stepping into Australia’s past but with great coffee and a growing number of shops.

Start your adventure at the popular Coolamon Cheese Co-op, known for its handmade local cheeses. Stock up for a picnic or enjoy a quiet nibble while exploring town. For something classic, The Old Convent serves delicious Devonshire Tea with homemade scones, cream and jam (book ahead for groups on 0412 177 230).

Explore nearby forest trails and scenic drives, especially stunning when the yellow canola fields are in bloom. Don’t miss the surrounding countryside and nearby villages along the Riverina Canola Trail, including Ganmain, Ardlethan, Marrar, Matong and Beckom.

Getting to Coolamon, NSW

Coolamon is about 5 hrs (460 km) from Sydney or 28 mins from Wagga Wagga. The easiest route from Sydney is via the Hume Highway, turning off near Junee Road past Wagga Wagga and following signs to Coolamon. From Canberra, it’s around 3 hrs 15 mins (260 km) through Yass, Junee and Marrar, or about 2 hrs 45 min (225 km) north from Albury. It’s a relaxed drive through open countryside, with rolling hills, farmland and gorgeous golden canola fields in spring.

  • Coolamon Cheese Co:  learn the craft of cheesemaking with their award winning cheesemaker, Jennifer Nestor, at one of their workshops and savour their handcrafted cheeses, made from quality Riverina produce. Try double brie style ‘D’Brie’, ‘The Rock’ – a blue vein and ‘Belle Isle’ – a soft blue cheese, as well as a range of Australian native flavours ie cheeses made with indigenous ingredients. Open 7 days a week from 10am to 5pm with a good range of cheeses (about a dozen) for tasting, on sale and to have for lunch as a cheese platter or in one of the other dishes on offer. They also serve tea, coffee and are licensed to sell beer, wine etc and offer a cheese making guided tour. It’s fabulous!
