K’gari Views Beachhouse began as a dream. In August 2021, owner Nick, armed with his preferred sketching pen, began roughing out plans while sitting on a towel on the sand. His partner Jane, taking in the vast Fraser coastline and on the lookout for whales, freely added ideas as they gazed over the sparkling waters. Their shared vision quickly took shape – from concept to design, inspired by nature.
A Rare Find with Breathtaking Views
Located at Point Vernon, Hervey Bay, K’gari Views Beachhouse occupies a rare plot of oceanfront land. Jane recalls, “We stumbled upon this undulating block during a walk along the Esplanade. “It held a plum position, elevated with stunning views of both the coastline and K’gari Island, ” said Jane. ’It was the bountiful Poinciana tree firmly rooted happily towards the rear of the property, that did it for me. It faced the Pacific Ocean and framed the block so beautifully; I could envisage the house in front of it”. Keeping the Poinciana tree was non-negotiable.
Nick and Jane’s vision for the property combines “an Australian modern bush barn with elements of a Queenslander and Scandinavian design principles for simplicity, balance, and functionality”. The result is a home that integrates seamlessly into the ‘beachy’ neighbourhood while embracing modern comfort and sustainability.
Sustainable Design & Luxury Living
K’gari Views Beachhouse features environmentally conscious design elements, such as natural cross ventilation and cooling sea breezes that enhance comfort during hot summer months. However, “short, cold winters in Hervey Bay get down to 9-10C” they said. So, on the western underneath side of the house is a burnished slab providing a thermal mass that warms the house by the low winter sun, adding “it was more economical than laying timber foundations”.
The property’s spacious floor plan includes wide, open corridors that lead guests through a glass-walled gallery hall with views of the surrounding garden and the iconic Poinciana tree. Floor-to-ceiling windows in every bedroom and living space offer uninterrupted views of the ocean, where, during whale season, guests can spot humpbacks breaching in the distance.
A Home That Embraces Australian Living
Guests will enjoy expansive verandahs and wide eaves that offer shade in the summer while allowing winter light to filter through. The home is also equipped with solar panels that have already provided credit to the grid. The exterior is finished with Australian Black Butt timber for durability, while the interior boasts luxurious features such as high ceilings, clean white VJ panelling, a nod to the Queenslander and coastal aesthetic and a minimalist design with a mix of neutral tones and textures.
Maximising features, light and space, the floor plan has an entrance through a wide corridor down a hallway with the Poinciana tree and garden waiting patiently at the other end. The floor to ceiling window glazed gallery hall then joins the living spaces to the bedroom wings, either side. All bedrooms have floor-to-ceiling windows soaking in those views. Looking in the distance to the ocean views from the living room, you might spot the pectoral fins of gracious humpbacks as they rise through the ocean during whale season.
