Gulgong, the Gateway to Mudgee Wine Region

A short drive away, you’ll find award-winning wineries, farm gate produce, and natural wonders like The Drip Gorge in Goulburn River National Park. It’s only a 5 minute drive from the historic gold mining town of Gulgong and the vineyards of Mudgee beckon only a 20 minute drive from Owl Head Lodge.

Gulgong’s Country History and Spirit

After all, what really makes Gulgong special is its people – welcoming, down-to-earth locals who take pride in their town’s history and love sharing it with visitors.  In fact, Gulgong is also home to Henry Lawson the Australian writer and bush poet whose portrait is represented on the Australian 10 dollar note (reverse side). Spending his formative years in Gulgong, Lawson’s works reflect life from the outback gold-mining town in the 19th century. In addition, if you look closely at the 10 dollar banknote, you’ll spot the Times Bakery and Gulgong Dispensary, that still operate today.

Food, Wine, and Country Hospitality in Gulgong, Gateway to Mudgee

Additionally Gulgong offers a cosy selection of pubs, cafés, bakeries, and restaurants where you’ll find hearty meals and warm country hospitality. Local markets and boutique shops add to the small-town charm.
